Ferne Scherner

May 16, 1925 ~ October 25, 2016 (age 91) 91 Years Old

     Ferne B. Scherner, age 91, of Holstein, passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society of Holstein.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 10:30 AM at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Holstein with the Rev. Matthew Martens officiating.  Burial will be at the Holstein Cemetery of Holstein.  A visitation will be held on Friday, October 28, 2016 from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Holstein. 

     Ferne (Bruning) Scherner, daughter of Ferdinand and Laura (Pieper) Bruning was born on May 16, 1925 in rural Douglas Township, Ida County.  She was baptized on May 30, 1926 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Cushing, Iowa and confirmed on July 3, 1938, Cushing, Iowa.

     Ferne attended Douglas No. 6 Township Elementary School then attended and graduated from Holstein High School.  Upon graduation, she studied at Buena Vista College at Storm Lake, Iowa.  After college, she taught school at Washta, Iowa for three years.

     Ferne married Harold Scherner on March 17, 1946 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein, Iowa.  They lived on the family farm northwest of Holstein from 1947 until 1986 when they moved into their home in Holstein.  Even upon her retirement, she continued active involvement in farming decisions.  Harold passed away March 3, 1987.   Ferne moved into Char-Mac Assisted Living in November 2005 and the Good Samaritan Society in 2012.

     To this union two children were born, Paul of Dubuque, IA and Barbara Rasmussen of Denison, IA.

     Ferne was a faithful member of WELCA, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church and Sarah Circle in Holstein, the American Legion Auxiliary, and several card clubs.  She enjoyed socializing with family and friends, reading and playing cards.

     Left to cherish her memory are her children, Paul and Joyce Scherner of Dubuque, IA, Barbara and Jerry Rasmussen of Denison, IA; five grandchildren, Ryan Scherner and Trisha Girdwood of Oak Park, IL, Laura and Gerber Santos of Fredericksburg, VA, Jessica and Tim Hinners of Carroll, IA, Jason and Heather Rasmussen of Manning, IA, Katie and Greg Leinen of Manning, IA; eight great-grandchildren, Arlo Scherner of Oak Park, IL, Diego and Alejandro Santos of Fredericksburg, VA, Tyler, Emma and Noah Hinners of Carroll, IA Sophia Rasmussen and Owen Leinen both of Manning, IA.  She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Geri Bruning of Holstein; several nieces and nephews; and the beloved staff and friends of Char-Mac Assisted Living and the Good Samaritan Society.

     She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; brother LaVerne Bruning; sister and brother-in-law, Ann and John Conley; and nephew, Brian Bruning.
