Douglas D Deming

Douglas "Doug" Deming, age 79, passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at the Mercy One Hospital of Sioux City. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 1:30 P.M. at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Moville with the Pastor Ed Pease and Pastor Wayne Gallipo officiating. A visitation will be held on Friday, September 27, 2024 at 4:00 P.M. - 5:30 P.M. with a prayer service starting at 5:30 P.M. at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Moville. Burial will be at the Correctionville Cemetery of Correctionville. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Moville is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Woodbury Central Athletic Department or Noah's Hope Animal Rescue.

Douglas Dean Deming was born October 2, 1944 in Cushing, Iowa to Arthur and Dorothea (Shever) Deming.  He was raised in Correctionville, was baptized at Grace United Methodist Church and graduated from Correctionville Public School in 1963.  After high school he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Wayne State College then earned his Masters in Psychology from the University of South Dakota.

Doug married Barbara Johannsen, his girlfriend since the 5th grade, on June 5, 1966.  They were blessed with three daughters.

Doug’s first teaching and coaching job was at Eastwood High School in 1967.  In 1973 he got a job at Ar-We-Va where he was a guidance counselor and head football coach.   Doug and Barb moved from Westside, Iowa to Moville so he could be closer to the family farm in Correctionville where Doug farmed on his nights and weekends. In 1976 he started teaching at Woodbury Central where he held positions as a business teacher, a guidance counselor, football coach and the athletic director. He was a fixture in the hallways of Woodbury Central, always there with a cup of coffee, a smile, a joke, a thoughtful word of advice and a supportive shoulder. He retired from teaching in 2001 and from farming in 2007.

Football was an important part of Doug’s life and career. He was awarded the Assistant Football Coach of the Year Class 1A and in 1980 was the defensive football coach for the Iowa State Class 1A Champions. He usually celebrated his birthday during Woodbury Central’s Homecoming week and always had a crazy part in the faculty’s Homecoming skit.  In later years he enjoyed having coffee with former football players from his first year of coaching at Eastwood. They even visited for several years at their house at Table Rock Lake in Missouri.

Doug enjoyed spending time at their cabin on the Missouri River where the family spent their summers beginning in 1985. It was there that he developed a love for boating and where Doug became the best tube puller. Doug and Barb moved to Table Rock Lake in 2005 where he made many friends. He was so proud of his family and never had a conversation with anyone without telling them about his daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren. He supported anything that his grandchildren did.  Each time the grandsons walked into the room they were greeted with a mandatory fist bump and Baby B was greeted with a hug. Doug was a patriotic person and an Iowa Hawkeye, Chicago Bears and LA Dodgers fan as well as a newly converted Nebraska football fan. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sioux City.

He is survived by his wife, Barb; daughters, Deidre (Steve) Nettleton, Heather (Jeff) Longval, Ericka (Chris) Heiser; grandchildren, Zachary Ryan, Nathan (Jessica) Ryan, Tyler (Priscilla) Nettleton, Brooke (Max) Vollmer, Lane Longval, Luke Longval, Carson George, Heath Heiser and Joshua Heiser; great-grandsons, Asic Ryan and Ryder Nettleton.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Dorothea Deming; grandparents, Ernie and Etta Shever and Charles and Katherine Deming; sister, Deanna Spink; brother, Terry Deming; three sisters-in-law, Sharon Gainor, Connie Johannsen-Frahm and Margaret Ann Stingley.
