Eugene Roy Baker was born April 10, 1923 in Canova, South Dakota to Raymond Laurence and Clara Belle (Manker) Baker. He graduated from Correctionville High School. Eugene was a member of the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943-1945 and flew 35 bombing missions over Germany and France. When he returned from the Army he started farming near Correctionville, where he lived until he moved into town in 1970. On August 20, 1946 he was married to E. Darlene (Martin) Baker in Anthon, Iowa. To this union two sons were born. In 1962, Eugene and his brother-in-law, Leon Harrison, along with their wives, operated “The Corner Hardware” for 13 years. After that endeavor, he opened an antique store. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He loved farming, gardening, woodcarving and golfing. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Reifel Baker, Howard Baker, Raymond Baker and Gilbert Baker; and sister Joy Baker Mattson. Survivors include sons, Steven Baker and JoAnn Pillifant of Sarasota, FL and Wesley and wife, Roxann Baker of Correctionville; grandchildren, Dusty and wife Julie Baker of West Des Moines, IA and Misty and her fiancée, RJ Nay of West Des Moines, IA; one great-grandchild, Logan Baker; a sister, Margaret Baker Gernhart; and many nieces and nephews.
