George was born September 28, 1923 on a farm in Danbury, IA, the son of Jacob and Mary (Papuga) Sokolowski. He grew up in Danbury and graduated from St. Patrick’s Academy of Danbury. In 1942, he and his family moved to a farm near Holstein, Iowa. He helped his parents with the farm and the transition from using horse drawn farming equipment to using more modern farming methods and machinery. In 1950, he took over the farm.
In 1952 he married Mary Lorna McKenna from Storm Lake, Iowa. To this union six children were born. George loved his children and enjoyed watching them grow up and participate in school sports, vocal music, drama, and band. He enjoyed his grand- and great-grand children. George was active in sports all his life. He played baseball, softball, bowling, golf, and tennis.
His deep faith in God and the love of his family helped him survive cancer, heart by-pass surgery, and a stroke.
George helped build the Holstein golf course, Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, and a renovation of Calvary Cemetery. Throughout the years, he was active in the parish. He served on the Holstein Community School Board in various positions including president.
George is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Lorna; his siblings Frances and her husband Leo Schleimer, Rose and her husband Coyle Darrah, Joseph, Helen and her husband Carl Ortner, Paul and his wife Helen, Mae and her husband George Barry, Henry, Edward, and Frank; and several nephews and nieces.
George is survived by his children and their spouses, Christine Titcomb of Holstein, Iowa, Elizabeth and Merritt Wiese of Omaha, Nebraska, Patrice Sokolowski of Omaha, Nebraska, Timothy and Pamela Sokolowski of Apopka, Florida, Jay and Irene Sokolowski of Loveland, Colorado, and Daniel and Diane Sokolowski of Clear Lake, Iowa; grandchildren and their spouses, Jason and Jill Titcomb, Joseph Titcomb, Mona and Chris Whipps, Christopher and Britney Titcomb, Michael and Kaleigh Wiese, Jesse Wiese, Olivia Wiese, Alex, Erik, Connor, Ella Sokolowski, Tiffany Beasley; great-grand children, Wyatt , Caleb, Fiona Whipps, Maisy Titcomb, Kyndle Beasley; sisters-in-law Eleanor Sokolowski and Joyce Sokolowski; and many nieces and nephews.
