Gene Hunting of Gordon, NE died on February 18, 2026 at Gordon Countryside Care while recovering from surgery after a fall and complications from Parkinson’s. Graveside services will be held at a later date.

Harmon Eugene Hunting was born on June 28,1944 in Sioux City, Iowa to Harmon and Earline (Guthridge) Hunting. Gene was raised in Moville and graduated in 1962 from Moville high school where he participated in football, basketball, track and baseball. He was a member of the 4x220 relay and medley relay track teams which won state titles. He graduated from Wayne State College where he played football and obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree. He later received his educational administration degree from University of Nebraska at Kearney.

He married Sharon Davis in 1965 and they were later divorced.

Gene taught school and coached in Schuyler NE, Palestine TX, and Cozad NE. Winning two state championship titles while coaching football.

Survivors are longtime partner Dena Hare of Gordon NE; sons, Jeffrey (Kim) and Matthew(Brooke) Hunting both of Omaha, NE; granddaughter, Jordyn Hunting, CO; siblings, Coni (Joe-deceased) Coffey, Dysart, IA and Rand (Jan) Hunting, Overland Park, KS and Dena’s daughter and son, Stormy (Ben) Hare Hunter of Gordon, granddaughter, Ileigh Hunter Lincoln NE, Shane (Karen) Hare and Katelyn, MN as well as several nieces and nephews.
