Jon Hess

Jon C. Hess, age 78, of Moville, passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2025 at Holy Spirit Retirement Home of Sioux City. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, August 4, 2025 at 10:30 A.M. at the Immaculate Conception Church of Moville with Fr. Michael J. Erpelding officiating. Burial will be held at the Arlington Cemetery of Moville. A visitation will be held on Sunday, August 3, 2025 from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Moville.

Jon Clifford Hess was born December 21, 1946 to Clifford and Florence (Shoemaker) Hess, growing up the youngest of three boys on a rural Anthon farm. He attended Climbing Hill School until the school consolidated with Moville, graduating in 1965. It was when the schools consolidated that he met his sweetheart and future wife, Carmen Rogers. Jon enlisted in the Air Force following high school and served from 1966-1969. He was stationed in Clovis, New Mexico. Jon and Carmen were married on March 1, 1969. The couple returned to Moville where he and Carmen remained the majority of their lifetimes.

Jon worked for Hobbs Chevrolet before taking a job with Woodbury County, where he would work until his retirement in 2008. He was an active member of the Moville Fire Department for 39 years and was the Fire Chief for 29 years. He was instrumental in the creation of the Northwestern Iowa Fire School. Jon belonged to the Immaculate Conception Church of Moville and was a Communication Workers of America union steward. In his free time, Jon loved hunting, trapping and snowmobiling, until Parkinson’s made them too difficult to enjoy. Jon is being honored at a Parkinson’s Community Walk on August 9 in Moville. 

Jon is survived by his daughters, Camie and husband, Jeff Mayer of Golden Valley, MN and Wendi Hess and Donahue Holloway of Lawton, IA; granddaughter, Isabelle Mayer of Golden Valley, MN; brother, Joe Hess and wife Carolyn of Cedar Falls, IA; sister-in-law, Vicki Hess of Rock Island, IL and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carmen; parents and parents-in-law, brother, Charles; brother-in-law, James Rogers; sister-in-law, Virginia Kabisch and niece, Baylee Hess.
