Steve D. Hunwardsen, age 79, of Correctionville, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2025 at his home in Correctionville. A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 4, 2025 at 10:30 A.M. at the Grace United Methodist Church of Correctionville with Keith Byers officiating. A visitation will be held on Sunday, August 3, 2025 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Correctionville. Burial will be at the Correctionville Cemetery of Correctionville.

Steve D. Hunwardsen, age 79, of Correctionville, died on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at his home.Steve D. Hunwardsen was born on March 25, 1946 to Junior and Betty (Ashmore) Hunwardsen. He graduated from Correctionville High School in 1964.
On May 13, 1967, Steve was united in marriage to Sharon (Perkins) Hunwardsen. To this union two sons were born, Scott and Shane. 

During high school he worked numerous jobs including painting and plumbing. Upon graduating high school he was drafted into the United States Army. He served in the Vietnam War for one year before returning home. Steve worked for Irving F. Jensen,and later went on to work 30 years for Woodbury County, 23 of them being a foreman. He retired in 2005. Steve was a volunteer firefighter for 37 years. Steve was a longtime member of the American Legion and the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. He was also the ‘Head Batter Mixer’ for the Chamber’s Annual Pancake feed, mixing up hundreds ofgallons of pancake batter over the years. In 2007, Correctionville Chamber of Commerce and CEDCOR named Steve and his wife Sharon Honorary Citizen’s of the Year. 

Steve, better known as “G’pa”, a nickname given to him by his grandkids, enjoyed every second spent with his family. Attending many ball games, school events, and surprise drop in visits, he was always excited to witness his grandchildren growing. If he wasn’t with his family, you could find him tinkering with tractors in his garage,mowing his lawn, or cruising the streets of town. You may not have always recognized him at first as Steve loved to frequently update his ride. He enjoyed coffee at Casey’s and visiting with friends in the community. No one was a stranger to Steve. 

He is survived by his son, Shane (Amber) Hunwardsen; daughter-in-law Kathy Hunwardsen; four grandchildren, Brittany (Andrew Volkert), Ashley (Seth Schumacher),Brooke (AJ Nitzschke), Tyler; one great grandchild, Nash and one on the way; sisters, Vicki Meyer and Pat (Dan) Meister; sisters-in-law, Shirley Thompson and Mary Caskey; special friend Kathy Goodwin; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. In death, 

Steve was preceded by his beloved wife, Sharon Hunwardsen; son Scott Hunwardsen; parents Junior and Betty Hunwardsen; father and mother-in-law Gerald and Lucille Perkins, brothers-in-law Al (Wiggs) Meyer, Doug Thompson, and Gary Caskey.
