David Schmidt Obituary

David F. Schmidt, age 78, of Holstein, IA, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2020 at Unity Point Health - Allen Hospital of Waterloo.  A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Holstein with Pastor Bob Lewis officiating.  Burial will be at the Holstein Cemetery of Holstein.  A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein.

David Ferd Schmidt  was born on December 12, 1941 to LuVerne and Minnie (Fritz) Schmidt at their home in rural Holstein. He grew up in Holstein and graduated from Holstein High School in 1961.

David married his best friend, Linda Kay Hueschen, on May 14, 1964 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Holstein. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends on May 14, 2014. Two years later Linda passed away on March 17, 2016.
The couple was blessed with two children, Lisa and Michael. Dave and Linda raised their family in Holstein. As a family they enjoyed attending their children’s school functions and athletics activities.  Together they took yearly family vacations. They especially enjoyed playing cards and board games.  Their 6 grandchildren brought great joy into their lives.   Likewise, they were thrilled with the birth of their 4 great-grandchildren.

Throughout his life, Dave was a conscientious hard worker and held several jobs before beginning his career at the Holstein Coop. Dave retired from the Holstein Cooperative Elevator after 38 years of always putting the customer's needs first. While working at the Coop, he also drove a school bus route before and after work and drove a bus for the girls’ softball team in the summer. Dave was an assistant scoutmaster of his son’s Boy Scout Troop 144 for many years.  Dave assisted Mike in establishing a lawn mowing business, which he then continued long after Mike had graduated.

Outside of working, Dave and Linda spent much of their time with family, friends, and their faith community. They never missed the opportunity to travel many miles to support their children and grandchildren in their numerous activities. Countless evenings were spent socializing with friends and relatives at bingo and card club. Both Dave and Linda were lifelong active members of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents LuVerne and Minnie, wife Linda, brothers Jim and Richard Schmidt, and several aunts and uncles.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Lisa Schmidt of Mapleton, Iowa; son Mike Schmidt (and his wife Julie) of Dysart, Iowa; twin brother, Daniel (and his wife Karen) of Cherokee, Iowa; two sister-in-laws Elaine (Jim) and Kathy (Richard); six grandchildren, Ashley Harwerth (and her husband, Nate) of Sterling, Colorado, Kaylee Oberreuter (and fiance, Belinda) of Arvada, Colorado; Thomas Oberreuter of Ida Grove, Iowa, Olivia Oberreuter of Sioux City, Iowa, and Emily and Aubrey Schmidt of Dysart, Iowa; four great grandchildren, Taylor Hopkins of Arvada, Colorado, Titus, Ellie, and Caleb Harwerth of Sterling, Colorado.
