Gene Yearous Obituary

Gene A. Yearous, age 88, of Holstein, formerly of Galva, passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at the Spencer Hospital of Spencer.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at 10:00 AM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein with the Pastor Lori VonHoltum officiating.  A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A luncheon will follow at the Lohff Schumann Community Center.  Burial will be at the Lakeside Cemetery of Balaton, MN at 3:30 PM Saturday, June 18, 2022.  Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Dibbern Post #454 of Galva following the service.  

Gene Albion Yearous was born November 12, 1933 on a farm south of Balaton, MN to J. Albion and Beulah Minnie (Foresman) Yearous.  He was a graduate of Balaton High School in 1951. He enlisted with the United States Air Force in 1954 and served for four years. Gene then earned a BS in Animal Husbandry from South Dakota State University in 1961.

  Gene was united in marriage to Merle Marie Huck on April 26, 1959 in Balaton, MN.  They moved to Galva, Iowa in 1971 where they raised their three children, Brad, Jackie and Gena.

Gene was a lifelong farmer, farming for 61 years.  In addition to farming he held several part time jobs in the area.  He was a member of the American Legion Dibbern Post #454 where he served as a past commander and a member of the REC Board.  He was a longtime member and helped to build the Galva United Methodist Church and held several offices in the church.  He enjoyed bowling, playing horseshoes and having morning coffee in Galva. Gene loved to visit and would sit down and talk with anybody. Gene especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his children, Brad (Julie) Yearous of Galva, IA, Jackie Yearous of Holstein, IA and Gena Yearous of Balaton, MN; grandchildren, Amy (Nick) Schopperth of Beaver Creek, OH, Jason (Megan) Yearous of Cedar Falls, IA, Mallory (Camron) Bremer of Carroll, IA, Kyle (Heather) Yearous of Hiawatha, IA, Lauren Yearous of Storm Lake, IA, Kate (Tristan) Hindes of Balaton, MN and Maggie Yearous of Balaton, MN; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Virgina Yearous and Marjorie Mathews; one brother-in-law, Gene (Bud) Kerger; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Merle; brother Delmar Yearous, sister MaryLee Kerger; brother-in-law Clarence Huck and wife MaryAnn; sister-in-law Margaret Anderson and husband Ivan; brother-in-law Russell Mathews; one infant granddaughter, Elizabeth,  and his parents-in-law Clarence and Irene Huck.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Alzheimers Association or VA Community Care Network in Sioux Falls, SD.
