Gordon Lawrence Sorensen

Gordon L. Sorensen, age 91, of Galva, passed away on Monday, October 26, 2021 at his home of Galva.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 1:00 PM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein with the Pastor Nancy Peterson  officiating.  Burial was held at the Galva Township East Cemetery of Galva.  There will be no visitation.  Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Dibbern Post #454 of Galva following the service.  

Gordon passed away on Monday, October 26, 2021 at his home of Galva.

Gordon Lawrence Sorensen was born September 1, 1930 in Galva, Iowa to Raymond and Leona Sorensen.  He lived his entire life in Galva except for the four years he served in the U.S. Navy.  After boot camp he was assigned to the U.S.S. Valley Forge (CVA-45) serving during the Korean War in the Pacific and Korean area.  He returned home to Galva at harvest time and was encouraged to help the grain elevator out during that busy time.  He was given the title of Assistant Manager and ran the books, many years before computers. Later Gordon was named manager of the Galva Union Elevator where he worked for 42 years.  

In 1955 he married Mary Jane Roepke who was an elementary teacher.  They were married in the Meadow Star Church between Washta and Piersen.  To this marriage two children were born: Dennis and Diane.     

Gordon was an active volunteer in the community.  He was on the Galva City Council for many years in addition to the Galva Fire Department, First Responders, Ida County Fair Board, the Galva Bank Board and the Ida Community Bank Board.  He was a member of the Galva United Methodist Church. Gordon was proud of Diane who graduated from Morningside College with a BSN and is still working in the medical field. He also took great pride in Dennis’s graduation from Iowa State University in Aerospace Engineering and in his Naval career.    

Surviving Gordon is his wife Mary of Galva, IA; son, Dennis and his wife Suzanne, of Oak Hill, Virginia and their two children, Michael of Seattle, Washington and Kim Stepanuk of Columbia, Maryland; daughter, Diane and her three sons: Gordon, Andrew and Daniel Miller, all of the St. Louis area; great-grandchildren, Annica and Owen Miller and Reagan Mary Stepanuk,. He is also survived by his brother, Wendell (Mary Lou) Sorensen of Holstein, IA and a sister-in-law, Darlene Roepke of rural Washta, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Donna Else, and LaVonne McAtee and brothers, Gaylen and Eldon Sorensen.
